Two screens are better than one for modern Britons, with more than half admitting using a laptop or phone at the same time as watching television. In more evidence of how digital technology is dwindling attention spans, a survey found 60 per cent of us regularly watch a show on our sets while simultaneously keeping an eye on something else.
Distractions include keeping up with friends on social networking sites such as Facebook, shopping online, or posting comments about the show being watched. Industry marketing body Thinkbox tracked the viewing behaviour of 3,000 adults over two years. It found 60 per cent will go online while watching television at least two or three times a week and 37 per cent will do it every day.
David Brennan of Thinkbox said: ‘Live TV is benefiting from on-demand TV services and social media.‘The internet has given viewers the ability to catch up with missed shows, to interact in real time via social media, and to even transactwhile watching.’
